About this Event

As part of our opening celebrations, Olivia Plender is joined by Dr Kathryn Murphy to discuss the history of women’s healthcare and its legacies today, with reference to the medical casebooks of 17th-century astrologers Simon Forman and Richard Napier. This event is free, but booking is essential.

Kathryn Murphy

Kathryn Murphy is Fellow in English Literature at Oriel College and Associate Professor in the Faculty of English at the University of Oxford. Her research focuses on early modern poetry, prose, philosophy and the literary essay, with particular interests in seventeenth-century thought and writers including Robert Burton. She is also a critic and essayist, writing on art and literature for Apollo Magazine, and co-edited On Essays: From Montaigne to the Present. Her forthcoming book, Robert Burton: A Vital Melancholy, will be published in 2027.

Olivia Plender

Olivia Plender is an artist based in Stockholm and London whose work explores the relationships between gender, power and knowledge, often drawing on the histories of social movements. Her exhibition Little Fennel’s Complaint is her first UK institutional solo presentation since 2013 and examines women’s health and the history of medicine through seventeenth-century medical case notes.
