About this Event
From cult following to becoming the biggest band in the world in the 1990s, Athens, Georgia’s R.E.M. remains a household name among Gen X-ers and Millennials alike.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted band quietly called it quits in 2011, leaving behind a huge legacy. It’s undeniable that Mike Mills, Peter Buck, Michael Stipe and Bill Berry wrote some of the greatest songs of the modern era. The group sold millions of albums internationally and influenced legions of younger bands.
Not content to let those amazing songs gather dust, four Winnipeg musicians and friends came together in winter 2023 to start rehearsing a live show focusing currently on R.E.M.’s formative years in the 1980s, dubbed “Oddfellows Local: A tribute to R.E.M., the IRS years.”
The act features veterans of the city’s music scene and recreates the creativity and energy of R.E.M.’s first 10 years (1980-1990).
Playing a mix of deep cuts mixed with hit songs including Driver 8, The One I Love, Fall on Me and It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine), the band’s shows to date have been lauded by live music fans and R.E.M. die-hards alike.
Oddfellows Local is:

Jeff Derksen: guitars, vocals
Wes Gerbandt: bass
Jay Turner: drums, vocals
