Oars and Orcas – The story of rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic.
Wednesday 3rd June, 7.00 pm at the Bix Community Hub in Saint James’ Church, Old Bix Road, Henley on Thames. RG9 6BY.
Rosie Tong, From Henley, has not long returned from rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic from La Gomera to Antigua as part of the World’s Toughest Row. Rowing two hours on and two hours off 24 hours a day, her crew of three women battled sleep deprivation, initial seasickness, extreme temperatures, storm force winds, 10 metre waves and being hit by flying fish !
Skipper of the team Row with the Flow, Rosie will talk us through her journey, from being inspired by seeing an old ocean rowing boat five years ago to lighting the flares on the finish line in January this year. You will hear about the gruelling preparation required and the reality of spending six weeks on an eight metre rowing boat in the middle of an ocean, from living on dehydrated food and desalinated water to the incredible sunsets and being surrounded by a pod of orcas.
After the talk there will be a raffle in aid of the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust and Ocean Generation and all proceeds from the evening will go direct to these charities.
“Tickets” are available by donation to the Row with the Flow Givewheel page https://gvwhl.com/XMOY3 (There are no physical tickets. Your name will be added to the guest list “on the door” on 3rd June).
