The Coen Brothers take Homer's Odyssey, transplant it to Depression-era Mississippi, and create their most joyful and musically rich film. This 2000 masterpiece is a tall tale told with a wink, where chain gang escapees become accidental recording stars and the South is painted in sun-drenched sepia tones that feel like a folk memory come to life.
George Clooney delivers one of his finest performances as Ulysses Everett McGill, a smooth-talking convict who escapes prison with his dim-witted companions Pete (John Turturro) and Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) to recover buried treasure before it's flooded by a new dam. Their odyssey through the Deep South encounters Sirens, a Cyclops, baptisms, bank robberies, and a gubernatorial campaign—all while being pursued by the relentless lawman (a never-better Daniel von Bargen).
But what truly makes this film sing is its music. T Bone Burnett's Grammy-winning soundtrack sparked a roots music revival, anchored by "Man of Constant Sorrow" performed by the fictional Soggy Bottom Boys. The music isn't just decoration—it's the soul of the film, capturing a moment when American folk traditions were being recorded for the first time.
Roger Deakins' groundbreaking cinematography used early digital color grading to create the film's distinctive golden, slightly unreal look—technology serving nostalgia. The result is a film that feels like a legend being told around a campfire, where truth matters less than the telling.
Pure Coen Brothers alchemy: literate, musical, hilarious, and absolutely unique.
Present in authentic 35mm film for the true cinematic experience!
