General Echo Reggae Disco is a longrunning night that celebrates classic Jamaican music, covering genres such as ska, rocksteady, roots and dub. The night is named after sadly departed MC Earl Anthony Robinson, the voice behind classic deejay tunes such as "Drunken Master". Usually taking place on the second Friday of the month at Walthamstow Trades Hall, a beautiful old school social club, guest selectors play some of the greatest music ever made on crackly 45s to a packed dancefloor. They've hosted legendary names such as Gladdy Wax and Musclehead of Saxon Sound System, as well as up-and-coming selectors. For New Year's Eve they're once again transferring the disco to Cafe OTO for one night only, bringing along a crew of some of their best former guests. The space where Cafe OTO now resides was home to a lot of reggae and dub parties in the late 1980s and early 90s, and we're looking forward to reviving the tradition in this present context. Featuring appearances of the below talent alongside GE residents Dan and Matthew, plus a few surprises to be revealed!
DJ SHERRINE (selector)
DJ Sherrine is vinyl selector who specialises in reggae and roots music, with a record collection that spans deep historical cuts to present day tunes. She inherited her father and grandfather's record collection from when they used to play sounds many years ago, covering ska, rocksteady, dub, dancehall, and more, and has diligently added to those records since that time. Playing out since 2015, including involvement with Albion Hifi Sound System and their annual dance in Broadwater Farm, Tottenham.
MASAI JUDAH (selector)
Forming half of East London reggae label Mas-Ski Productions, Masai Judah is of Jamaican heritage and started out with Magic Touch Sound who were the resident sound (along with local veteran Daddy Al G) at the 77 Club on Dalston Lane in the early to mid 80s. He's also designed his own sound system pre amps, sound fxs and syndrums, carved out a name on community radio, run record shops in Walthamstopw and South Woodford, and continues to be passionate about keeping the roots and traditions of reggae alive.
CLAPPER PRIEST (MC)
Clapper Priest grew up in a household with young Jamaican parents in Dalston, and as a result was introduced at a young age to the spirit of Jamaica with regular house parties and blues dances. He made his debut on the London sound system scene with the Paddington Terror Sound System alongside the likes of Sweetie Irie and Joe 90. He then became the MC and percussionist for Dalston-based reggae band One Style MDV, and got involved in legendary Ladbroke Grove-based pirate radio station Dread Broadcasting Corporation, working closely with DJ Lepke and Ranking Miss P, also working with community organisations with Hackney Youth in Progress, and much much more. In addition to his impressive skills on the mic, he is also a talented artist and screenprinter, and can be found at many market stalls around London selling his handprinted clothes and accessories.
