Philly Gumbo has been a popular presence on the Philadelphia music scene for 40 years. Their unique blend of New Orleans R&B, funk, reggae, blues, and soul has made them a "Best Of" selection by Philadelphia Magazine and has earned them performances at top venues like The Kimmel Center and World Café Live. They have opened for legendary acts like Dr. John, Buddy Guy & Jr. Wells, and Rick Danko and Levon Helm of The Band. Philly Gumbo has also played at major events such as the Atlantic City Summer Jazz Festival, Musikfest, and Jam On The River. They were pioneers of the live music scene at the famous South Street venue Bacchanal, where they often invited special guests to join them. Moreover, members of Philly Gumbo have played with iconic figures like Little Milton, Wilson Pickett, Bo Diddley, and Big Youth.
“Philly Gumbo’s long-term popularity has come from two things,” notes founding member Randall Grass: “an ability to play an authentic and unique mix of New Orleans R & B, funk, reggae, blues and soul, and the presence of great singers, such as Brenda Smith, Walt Taylor, Jeannie Brooks, Richard Johnson, and current lead vocalist India Rex.”
