Beginners & advance players welcome, everyone can learn reggae drumming!
Mission:
• Peace & release through chants & praise.
• Unity & consciousness through a common heartbeat.
• Learn to play authentic Rastafari Nyabinghi rhythms.
• Train in a percussion troupe & perform with the DubwiZe reggae band.
What is Nyabhingi?
Nyabinghi is a Rastafari tradition that promotes unity, strengthens the spirit with fellowship, and raises the consciousness in the heart of those in attendance.
Nyabinghi, is a gathering or celebration a joining together to praise, meditate, chant and drum the heartbeat of life. It is a powerful expression of spirituality and unity.
Nyabinghi drumming represents the heartbeat of a community and its connection to the nature of our existence. It creates an energy that uplifts the soul and brings you as a family together in harmony.
Nyabinghi chants, you can also chant and sing which carry messages of liberation, righteousness, and love for all humanity. They serve as a reminder of the commitment to justice, equality, and common brotherhood.
Nyabhingi is a spiritual journey, a celebration of spirit and the connection to the divine. It reminds us of our roots, our purpose, and the importance of spreading love and unity in the world.
How it works:
The circle consists of 3 or more layers.
• Thunder: Usually a double-headed bass drum, played with a mallet. In our circle this drum & its beat will be maintained by the larger drums while playing the heartbeat.
• Funde: The funde is the middle drum. It maintains the rhythms and variations of Nyabhingi and the essence of reggae in our circle
• Repeater: The repeater or kete, is the smallest and highest pitched drum whose beats are important to the overall feel of the Nyabinghi rhythm, but the repeater has a very improvisational role it is seen as the carrier of spirit.
• Shekere: An African shaker accompaniment. Members will also cycle through various hand held percussion substitutes
In the circle everyone will familiarise and synchronise themselves with the basic heartbeat rhythm before moving on to middle drums and then higher improvisation. A common rhythmic heartbeat will unite us through the synchronisation and ultimately freedom.
The rhythms are alive and mindfulness to their nature will flower creativity and inspire consciousness within the circle.
