Talk: Reframing Discovery in the Age of AI: From Sandwiches to Aeroplanes
Event Details
How should you frame a discovery when faced with a new problem or idea? How much time is enough? What tools should you use? And how is it changing in the age of AI?
In this talk, Tom explores how to frame discoveries in terms of risks and unknowns, drawing on real examples from his career and his Sandwich to Aeroplane scale.
You’ll learn about:
→ How to frame and plan a discovery before it begins
→ The risks of skipping the problem – including how one misjudged discovery contributed to a third of a company’s workforce being laid off
→ The risks to designers of over–planning, especially when risks and unknowns are low
→ How AI is reshaping discovery and bringing design closer to code
About Tom Hiskey
Tom Hiskey is a Senior Product Designer at EcoOnline – has over a decade of experience designing and researching products in complex, regulated domains. After starting his career in law, Tom co-founded and sold a startup before switching paths to design.
Since then, he’s worked across legaltech, healthtech, and sustainability, spanning early-stage startups and enterprise B2B SaaS, as an individual contributor and design leader. His work focuses on tackling messy, high-stakes problems, building inclusive and high-performing teams, and helping organisations navigate complexity with clarity and care.
Tom is particularly interested in how AI is reshaping design practice – from the tools designers use to how teams manage risk and plan discovery, and what it means for the future of our industry.
