About this Event
Nurturing Freedom Saturday Academy – Spring 2026 Series
Intergenerational • Culturally Responsive • Joy-Centered
The Nurturing Freedom Saturday Academy is a weekly, intergenerational program designed for children ages 3–8 and their families. Held Saturdays from 12–4 PM, this spring series invites families into a culturally grounded space where creativity, identity, and community connection are nurtured together.
Each week, children and caregivers will engage in:
Community Meal and Umoja Ritual at NOON.
✨ Sweetgrass Basket Making – Guided by Donna Edwards, children and families will learn the art, history, and significance of traditional Sweetgrass weaving, honoring the Gullah Geechee legacy of the Lowcountry.
🥁 African Drumming & Dance – Children will explore rhythm, movement, and communal expression through African diasporic drumming and dance traditions with Wona Womalan that celebrate joy, resilience, and cultural memory.
📖 History & Storytelling – Through interactive storytelling, music, and play, families will engage with stories rooted in African and African American history that affirm cultural pride and belonging.
Our approach is hands-on, play-based, and rooted in healing-centered engagement. Children learn alongside parents, grandparents, and community members—strengthening bonds while building cultural knowledge and confidence.
Cost: $50 for the full spring series
Series Dates: March 14, 21, 28, April 4, 2026
