RIT’s NTID Performing Arts will present Peter and the Starcatcher in November 2024, celebrating the 50th anniversary of NTID Performing Arts. This whimsical and adventurous prequel to the classic story of Peter Pan, based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, will be staged at the Robert F. Panara Theatre on the RIT campus. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on November 15-16 and 2 p.m. on November 16-17.As with all RIT/NTID Performing Arts productions, deaf actors will use American Sign Language and Visual Vernacular, while hearing actors will use spoken English.
This Tony-winning adaptation of Barry and Pearson’s best-selling novels, conceived for the stage by Roger Rees and Alex Timbers, written by Rick Elice, and featuring music by Wayne Barker, reimagines the story of how a miserable orphan becomes The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up (a.k.a. Peter Pan). The play explores themes of greed, despair, and the bonds of friendship, duty, and love through its engaging narrative.
The plot follows a young orphan and his companions, who are sent from Victorian England to an island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They are unaware of the mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin containing starstuff, a powerful celestial substance. When pirates led by the villainous Black Stache seize the ship to claim the trunk’s treasure, the adventure becomes even more thrilling.
This production promises to be a spectacular and magical event in honor of NTID Performing Arts’ 50th Anniversary. With extraordinary set, costume, and lighting designs by Erin Auble, Rosie Mazique, and Sacha Glasser, and captivating sound and projection design by Dan Roach, the show will be enhanced by the expert direction of JW Guido, Andy Head, and Serena Rush.
