About this Event

fanfare has been a vital platform within Amsterdam’s graphic design scene since its founding in 2014 by Freja Kir and Lotte van de Hoef. The interdisciplinary laboratory for communication will be presented by two of its members, most closely engaged with type: César Rogers and Miquel Hervás Gómez. fanfare actively engages with typography through workshops, lectures and exhibitions. We appreciate their experimental and forward-thinking approach to typography.

fanfare (b. 2014) is a laboratory, design studio and presentation space that explores different forms of communication through a critical lens. It initiates independent research trajectories that span the politics, sociology and technological limitations of media development.

Miquel Hervás Gómez (b. 1985), graphic designer and pedagogue based on the WWW, working as a link between experimental publishing, typography, tools and visual communication. He is an agitator for the Preparatory Course at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie as well as other international universities. A former member of Carne Kids, now acting as a workshop specialist at the Book Bindery and giving design direction at fanfare.

César Rogers (b. 1997) is a graphic designer, printer and educator based in Amsterdam. Alongside his participation in fanfare, he runs the Letterpress & Offset workshop at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. He researches how the history of printed matter can be re-injected into contemporary practices.

fanfare understands typography as a lively medium. A shared tool to carry messages and attitude, which must remain accessible in order to blossom. It is eminently contemporary, but it also has a history which shaped how it is understood today. Through various projects including visual identities, workshops and typefaces, fanfare will share their design processes, their playful approach to type design in parallel to research into the craft of mobile typography.
Located in the Tetterode building, home to the former Lettergieterij Amsterdam, which was an important type foundry in the Netherlands in the 20th century and investigating its history, César and Miquel will share their research on one of the forgotten typefaces of the Tetterode catalogue: Columbia.
