My work takes its shape as I spend time by the sea, watching the waves and the tides relentlessly changing shapes in the sand, weathering and reforming, wearing down and recreating. This undulating song the ocean sings is reminiscent to me of the story of birth, life, and death…the journey of everything…our being and our constant transformation.
Inspired by Akiko Hirai's work, and her way of juxtaposing finished and unfinished, I often mold my wheel thrown work into less perfect shaped forms, and subject them to glazes made with ash and clay, firing them with salt and soda.
My work expresses both the fragility and the resilience of the natural world, and the forces that allow life to both break down completely and be built up again.
