About this Event
Join Sheffield novelist Sally O’Reilly for a series of workshops focusing on classic short novels/novellas that have inspired her own writing, including her recent short novel (Scribe UK, 2025).
This workshop is open to anyone interested in stories, from complete beginners to more experienced writers.
We will be reading as writers, analysing the story in ways that help us understand the writing process better and learning from writers who have produced fiction that has lasted.
The first workshop will look at the novella 'The Dead' by James Joyce, from his story collection The Dubliners.
These friendly and informal workshops will include discussion about what makes these stories work, as well as writing exercises.
To prepare for each session, participants are asked to read a short novel.
- Order new from Juno Books (10% discount for Writers Workshop members if ordered in-store)
- Order secondhand from World of Books.
- Read for free through Sheffield Libraries or borrow from a friend!
There will be 2 more workshops in April and June, focussing on The Woman in Black, by Susan Hill, and Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes. Be sure to follow The Writers Workshop on Eventbrite for notifications!
