About this Event
Alunan Kampung Gelam and the 5AM Early Music Singers are back again!
Come join us to close the year in a celebration of songs from island nations.
As Christmas time approaches and carols fill the air, a mysterious call from the Fairest of Isles beckons. Journey with The 5AM Early Music Singers as we explore the musical world of Ireland and Scotland, featuring songs in Irish Gaelic, Manx and English. Grab a warm mug and snuggle up in your warmest blanket as we present: A Celtic Christmas. Nollaig Shona Duit!
Then, nourished by some kopi and kueh, sail away with Alunan Kampung Gelam to warmer Asian climes, as we sing classic vintage songs from the Nusantara and beyond, paying homage to those who have come before us. Interwoven with the songs, third-generation Kampung Gelam resident Faizah Jamal shares stories of the rich diversity of our beloved neighbourhood and invites you to reflect upon the power of songs as a source of hope and inspiration.

The 5AM Early Music Singers (@5amsingers) are a vocal ensemble based in Singapore, formed in late 2020 by a group of young and passionate singers as a platform for the research and performance of the Renaissance and Medieval classical music of Europe. The 5AM Singers strive to bring these underrepresented treasures of Early Music to everyone, ranging from the layperson to the musically experienced, through our commitment to quality chamber singing and historically-informed performance practice. Why 5AM? Because it's early music!
This performance will feature singers Laura Wang, Azura Farid, Jonathan MacPherson, Nicholas Toh and Loh Kok Jin.
Alunan Kampung Gelam (@alunankampunggelam) is a music collective initiated in 2023 by Faizah Jamal, a third-generation Kampung Gelam resident, together with her children Azura Farid (vocals) and Almira Farid (vocals and guitar/mandolin), and inspired by our dad/grandad, baritone Ahmad Jamal, who used to sing with Radio Malaya in the '50s and '60s. As the last of the 'old' Malay families to be still living in Kampung Gelam, we consider it our responsibility to tell our stories ourselves. and the honour of carrying on the musical legacy of our beloved neighbourhood. In our multi-generational family home in this heritage district, we have been making music and creating new memories. Our musical interests are an eclectic mix of opera, classical music, Irish/Scottish folk music, and vintage songs of the Nusantara and beyond.
For this event, we are joined by our good friends Thaddeus Chung (violin) and Riduan Zalani (rebana).
*This is the third time that the two music collectives have come together to share our music with you.*
