Altar Girl is an empowered quartet of femme and trans musicians from Portland, Oregon. Their music combines elements of post-punk and grunge while paying homage to old-school goth and darkwave influences. The band’s sound combines Kay’s wistful, vocal-heavy songwriting style with Mara’s atmospheric guitar and driving punk rhythm. Woven into the anthemic melodies are ruminating lyrical themes of heartbreak, feminist issues, environmental collapse, and gender dysphoria. Sam Mahon and Ariel Chamberlin drive the rhythm section, propelling each song through a landscape of feral peaks and haunting valleys. This August, they will embark on their first west coast tour in support of the release of their self-titled debut album.
