About this Event
On May 3 at the Gilman Brewing Company in Berkeley, the folks from Not Loud Concerts present the Gilman Jazz Festival. This festival is part of the Not Loud Concert Summer Series - a set of concerts designed to be Not too long, Not too expensive, and of course, Not too loud.
Designed with the audience's comfort in mind, this short festival will be held in the outdoor area behind Gilman Brewing. There, 2 local bands, and 1 internationally-touring ensemble, will perform fun and lively jazz as it was meant to be enjoyed - in a relaxed and casual environment.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase. The audience is welcome to bring chairs, and chairs will also be provided. There will be room to dance and room to sit. No porta-potties, but plenty of clean, indoor bathrooms.
Headlining the festival will be the Death and Taxes Swing Band, a 1940's style band playing danceable and fun big band jazz. Known for their wide-ranging travels, from Indonesia to Portugal, and also for their wild on-stage antics, this group brings the fun back to jazz. Right before their performance, there will be a short introductory swing lesson.
The festival will also feature Parlor Tricks, an industrial-themed, ragtime jazz band. Known for their infectious syncopation and stompin' fun, Parlor Tricks presents the sounds of Prohibition and beyond.
Beginning the afternoon with a short set, will be the Cal State East Bay Jazz Band, a group with a long history of serving as a training ground of future Bay Area jazz musicians.
Not Loud Concerts focus on creating an experience that is casual and fun for both the musicians and the audience. The concerts are never too long, never too expensive and of course never too loud.

What are Not Loud Concerts?
Not Loud Concerts was inspired by numerous jokes on the internet about wanting to go see a concert that was, “Not too loud, not too late, not too long, and not too expensive.”
With this idea in mind, Not Loud Concerts was created to showcase music based on the following principles:
- Not too loud
- Comfortable seating
- No hidden fees or crazy ticket prices
- Good parking whenever possible
- Not too long
These concerts are created for the enjoyment of the audience and are not based on old traditions.
