"A Quintet of Quartets"
A Collection of Artwork by Kendra and Izzy Matter
KENDRA MATTER
After taking part in Sage Bird’s postcard show last fall, I thought I would take a deeper dive into creating art more intentionally. This show is a collection of various pieces I have made in between the many events of a full life. These pieces are just a few examples of the many places and everyday things I envision in a drawing or painting as I observe color, light, and shadows. While I can finish a pencil drawing in a sitting or two, the oil paintings can take multiple sittings over many weeks or months to complete. I often know how a finished sketch will look, but the canvas takes on a life of its own throughout the process of walking away and returning to it. I am looking forward to stretching myself to continually create as an artist.
I have called Harrisonburg home since I graduated from JMU with a degree in art and art history, just a few years back! I teach by day and enjoy conversations on the porch with friends or heading out and about downtown. I am thankful for the support from my husband and three children in my recent artistic endeavors. It has been fun putting together this show with my daughter!
A few pieces in the show were made by request, I’d love to create a piece on commission for you! If you are interested in commissions, or purchasing original pieces (or prints) please send your requests to [email protected].

I wanted this series to be a reflection of my mind and how I see the world. The colors are bright and fun because those are always the colors I am drawn to and surround myself with in my art. The lines are never perfect and nothing is ever symmetrical because I am not a perfectionist and I love to find beauty in imperfections. This series is very exciting for me, it is the first time that I have felt as though everything is in my art style.
I am a senior at Harrisonburg High School and a student in the Fine Arts Academy. I love to create random things that pop into my head and I am always trying new media. I spend a lot of my free time hanging out with friends and going to house shows.
If you are interested in buying any of my work please contact me at [email protected]
We hope you enjoy the show!
