The historic Philadelphia Toboggan Company carousel number 33 spent 75 years at the Minnesota State Fair from 1914 to 1989 and was saved from the auction block in 1988 by the nonprofit citizens’ group Our Fair Carousel Inc., which owns and operates the ride as a Minnesota treasure in Saint Paul’s beautiful Como Park.Join Tracy Tolzmann for a review of the carousel's rich, colorful history, with a look at its 68 unique carved wooden horses, the mechanism that makes it all work, and the traditional “Voice of the Carousel,” the wonderful Wurlitzer 153 Band Organ.
Tracy M. Tolzmann is president of Our Fair Carousel, Inc. (ourfaircarousel.org), a collector of hand-cranked street organs and an 1883 vintage carousel organ, and the local chapter chairman of two antique automatic music collecting clubs - Snowbelt and Northern Lights.
