This class culminates in a performance showcase!
San Francisco’s North Beach in the late 1950s was a place of contradictions: smoky cafés buzzing with laughter, poets baring their souls at midnight, jazz musicians riffing into the unknown, and restless spirits searching for meaning in a world they didn’t quite fit.
In this immersive workshop-to-show intensive, performers will create an improvised show that captures both sides of the Beat Generation—the ecstatic poetry and the playful beatnik energy, the depth and the chaos, the howl and the snap.
What we’ll explore:
Spontaneous Beat Poetry & Jazz Underscoring – finding language and rhythm that shift from comic riffs to raw confessions.
Characters of the Scene – bohemian philosophers, eccentric hipsters, earnest seekers, lost lovers, and café jesters.
Atmosphere & Flow – weaving between moody, reflective stillness and fast-paced, playful exchanges, just like a jazz set shifting tempo.
Themes of Rebellion & Revelation – improvising around freedom, art, alienation, romance, and absurdity.
North Beach as Playground – building the show’s world from iconic settings like City Lights, Vesuvio Café, and smoky basement jazz clubs.
The Culminating Show: The intensive ends in a fully improvised performance: part living poem, part comic romp. The ensemble conjures a night in North Beach where a soulful confession can melt into a beatnik comedy sketch, where improvised poems are snapped into with finger-clicks and underscored by riffs, and where the spirit of the Beats is reborn in all its messy, glorious contradiction.
