Yoo Man-su lives a seemingly perfect suburban life with his wife and children until he is abruptly and ruthlessly laid off from the paper company where he has worked for 25 years. The American company that acquired his employer cites “no other choice” but to downsize for automation, a phrase that becomes a dark mantra throughout the film. As his severance pay dwindles and financial ruin looms, Man-su becomes increasingly desperate and humiliated by the job market’s rejection. Unable to find work in his specialized field, he concocts a plan to improve his own chances of securing one of the few available positions. Plotted with ornate precision but unfolding with the panic of a desperate man, the film tells the story of a man who goes to extreme lengths to eliminate the competition for the job he wants.
