Maureen Mwanawasa is a former First Lady of the Republic of Zambia who pioneered the
Organization of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA), now known as the Organization
of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD). Her commitment to the mission of OAFLA
led to her serving as President of the organization and as one of the longest functioning.
members of its Steering Committee.
Mrs. Mwanawasa is a lawyer, advocate and philanthropist whose causes involves Social
Enterprise development and Social Justice interventions.
Mrs. Mwanawasa serves on various boards including Habitat for Humanity International Inc
and Habitat for Humanity – Zambia as Board Chairperson. She is a patron for Breakthrough
Cancer Trust and a Rotarian.
Over the last two decades, Mrs.Mwanawasa’s passion and charisma for transformation
projects has distinguished her from other former First Ladies of Africa. Utilizing her platform
to help highlight a global public health issues. Through different interventions and avenues,
she helps facilitate local, national, regional, and international opportunities in education,
workforce, and sports. In Zambia, Mrs. Mwanawasa formed the Maureen Mwanawasa
Community Initiative (MMCI), MMCI has educational scholarships to over 600 students.
Additionally, Mrs. Mwanawasa established the Early Childhood Care Development and
Education (ECCDE) program, a Market- Based transformation concept targeting children of
female market traders. Over the years, approximately 1,200 children, have been provided with
care, education and food while their mothers trade in the busy markets, earning a living.
Mrs. Mwanawasa’s uses her international relations skills in transformation projects around
the world.
The numerous awards and honors Mrs. Mwanawasa has received over the years represent
her work as a Global Citizen who understands the problems of an interconnected world.
Included in her Global Citizen portfolio are awards from World Vision’s Hope, the John
Thompson Legacy of a Dream Award by Georgetown University and the Rusangu University
Community award.
