Nirvana and R.E.M. never played a live show together during Nirvana's active years (1987–1994). Although Kurt Cobain was a huge fan of R.E.M., particularly their album Automatic for the People, and there were rumors of a potential collaboration, they did not share a stage.Relationship: Michael Stipe of R.E.M. and Kurt Cobain were friends, and Stipe later inducted Nirvana into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
Post-Nirvana Connections: In 2014, surviving Nirvana members (Krist Novoselić, Dave Grohl) worked with R.E.M.'s Peter Buck in a supergroup called Super-Earth, which played live.
Context: While they never toured together, they were both major alternative rock acts in the early 90s, with R.E.M. often cited as a major influence on Nirvana.
**But now you can pretend it happened with Kansas City's own Nirvana and REM tribute acts NirvDamage and Begin the Begin.**
