We are looking forward to an exciting time at the end of October when we are presenting a tribute to the late Edinburgh composer Tom Cunningham (1946-2023) and his celebrated collaboration with best-selling novelist Sir Alexander McCall Smith, the latter having personally invited the Balliols to perform in Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh, where we will be at 4.30 p.m. on Sunday 27th October (free admission, but with voluntary retiring collection in aid of the My Name5 Doddie Foundation). On the previous Tuesday (22nd) at 7.30 p.m. we will also be at All Saints Episcopal Church, Lockerbie, as guests of Lockerbie Music Society (admission £10).The programme includes the complete "Ninian's Gift", their penultimate joint work about the lives of the early Scottish saints, which we previosly presented back in the spring, as well as songs from their other choral collaborations "Scotland at Night", "The Painter's Eye", "A Time of Gifts", and "Incredible Beasties". Interspersed with these are a 14th century Scottish plainsong hymn "Aurora rutilat", 16th century David Peebles's beautiful motet "Si quis diligit me", and Sir James MacMillan's "O radiant dawn", a modern classic.
Tom Cunningham composed music that is completely accessible, tuneful, memorable, is an absolute joy to sing, and with Alexander McCall Smith's exquisite texts, often very moving and humorous, their joint work was a match made in heaven.
We hope to see you at one (or even both) of these events.
