About this Event

Night School Lecture + Social: Where Scholarship Meets Cultural Life

What is Night School?
A live lecture series for people who want more from their nights.
Ideas out of the classroom and into the room; Experienced, not performed. Each evening begins with a research-driven talk and opens into live dialogue in a setting that’s social, thoughtful, and alive.

Come for the ideas. Stay for the conversation.

Topic

We’re taught to believe that prisons are necessary.
That punishment keeps society safe.
That “law and order” is the foundation of stability.

But what if that story is incomplete?

For this Night School, Rai Reece invites us into a deeper conversation about the role punishment plays in modern society—and whether it’s really serving us the way we think it is.

This isn’t a debate for or against crime.
It’s a closer look at the systems we’ve built in response to it.

We’ll explore:

  • Why punishment has become central to social control
  • What actually happens inside prisons (beyond what we see)
  • The transformative role of education behind bars
  • And the growing idea of abolition—not as fantasy, but as a serious alternative

Joining the conversation will be a formerly incarcerated guest, offering firsthand perspective on the realities—and possibilities—of life inside and beyond the system.

This isn’t about easy answers.
It’s about asking better questions.

Night School is where scholarship meets cultural life.
Come for the lecture. Stay for the conversation.
