Night at the Museum of Anatomy: A Dive into Facts and Functions of the Body

Join us for an evening exploring human anatomy as we open the doors of The Hunterian Anatomy Museum!

Ever wondered what a pacemaker looks like? Or the differences in male and female pelvises? If so, join us for a Night at the Museum of Anatomy in the Thomson Building from 6pm till 8pm as we explore facts about the body!

Eight interactive stations provide an overview of anatomical systems through medical devices, posters, and through 3D models as well as providing information on new advancements within the field of anatomy and how this information is useful. Each station is packed with resources and members of the Anatomy Public Engagement Team are present at every station to give more information and to answer any questions you may have!

The stations will focus on:

  • Head and neck anatomy - exploring the muscles of facial expression and movements of the tongue.
  • Neurology - locations of key functions such as language as well as special nerve locations.
  • Cardiac system - the function of pacemakers and replacement valves as well as comparison between foetal and adult hearts.
  • Respiratory system - models of the small structure of the lungs and explorations into how they function.
  • Gastrointestinal tract - overview of key organs in digestion and the process of food breakdown.
  • Upper limb - visulisations of muscle attachments and discussions of range of movement as well as specialised function.
  • Reproductive anatomy - models of stages of pregnancy and comparison of male vs female anatomy.
  • History of the museum - insight into how the large varied Hunterian collection came to be as well as a brief history of the building.

The evening will kick off with a short presentation from our Anatomy Public Engagement Team and Professor Rea at 6:15pm to introduce the stations and highlight what to expect during your visit.

After the presentation, you’ll be able to wander through the museum at your own pace to see the extensive collection of specimens on display and to explore the eight stations. Our team will be there to answer queries and to show case related specimens to their area of interest.

Whether a student, professional, or simply just curious about anatomy, this event gives a unique chance to explore the world of anatomy and to get great visual experience about the wonders of the human body.

**Please note that this event takes place in The Hunterian ANATOMY Museum in the Thomson Building - NOT in the main museum in the Gilbert Scott Building. The student entrance will be open to visitors, and there will be signs to direct you.

**Please note that for those under 16 years old, an accompanying adult needs to be present due to the sensitivity of some of the specimens.**

**Photography is NOT permitted at this event**

**2 tickets max per person**

Visiting The Hunterian Anatomy Museum - what to expect:

The museum consists of one large room with a ground floor and upper gallery; while the ground floor is fully accessible and accessible toilet facilities are available, the gallery can unfortunately only be reached by staircase.

Please take into consideration that the collections include human and animal remains which may be upsetting to some due to their nature and/or historical context; particularly sensitive examples are preparations showing developmental and reproductive anatomy, while the 18th- and 19th-century specimens and remains come from a period marked by colonialism and stark socio-economic inequality. Maps illustrating the museum layout are available, and staff will be present to advise you on how to plan your pathway across the museum. If you have any questions or concerns – please speak to us.
