Progressive bluegrass veterans Yonder Mountain String Band (YMSB) are a great example of a group that “plays with tradition.” Blending traditional instrumentation with jam-band improvisational aesthetics, YMSB delivers high-energy sets full of driving rhythms, masterful solos, and electric stage presence. They’ve been around since the late '90s, and were nominated for a 2023 Grammy for their album Get Yourself Outside. With a little effort you can still find coveted copies of their independently release album Elevation, which features Mike Marshall and Darol Anger — a good place to start, whether you’re revisiting their work or checking it out for the first time.
