Council Member Mitch Nowakowski and Erie County Legislator Howard Johnson are sponsoring a youth basketball tournament to be hosted in the City of Buffalo as an opportunity for youth to get active and build neighborhood relationships this summer. This is being organized in partnership with “Ballin’ for a Cause”, a local organization which aims to utilize sports as the tool to engage youth in positive year-round programs for growth and development. The tournament, funded by grants offered by the legislators’ offices, is meant to create an organized health initiative for youth in the City and allow for an open dialogue with students ages 12-18 about restorative justice circles, team building, and leadership development. It will be held once a month throughout the summer on Saturday June 25th, Saturday July 23rd, and Saturday August 13th at Franczyk Park, 146 Fleming Street, Buffalo, NY 14206.
Registration is free, but team spots are limited. All middle and high school students who wish to participate must register online by visiting https://tinyurl.com/nickelcity3on3 and sign a waiver by visiting https://tinyurl.com/3on3waiver. The deadline to register is June 19, 2022.
All registered players will receive a unique team jersey and water bottle. Teams should plan to have a mentor or coach with their group to assist with tournament needs for the day-of each event. There will be three divisions for the tournament, including ages 12-13, 14-16, and 17-18. Tournament winners will receive trophies and additional awards.
