Join us for an evening of art, music, and storytelling as we celebrate the life and work of Nick Fraser, the ‘East End's Van Gogh.’ in the atmospheric setting of The Crypt.
Nick Fraser:
Born to a bare-knuckle fighter on Blackheath Common, Fraser dedicated his life to the care and companionship of his mother and 32-year long toil at Tate & Lyle factory.
But for all his traditional East End qualities, a closely guarded secret is revealed in Fraser’s work. Cosmic truths, religious themes and abstract forms lay bare the tense conflict of a man exploring existence, consciousness, and the male body.
A romantic recluse, Fraser taught himself how to paint in a radical act of expression and contemplation. Using the construction and decorating materials readily available in his public life,
Fraser’s pieces are large in scale and often comprised of multiple panels the fiercely private and modern polyptychs of a true old school Londoner.
The result is a formidable, expansive and seldom-seen body of work that, like Fraser’s story, is coming to light for the first time through the memories and conservatorship of his life-long muse, friend and advocate, Mark O’Shaughnessy.
