Feel like a challenge?? Have I got a stunning walk for you. Now I’m starting the walk so the most challenging hill bit is first. Trust me you’ll understand.
We will head up the hill from Ohope into the bush, across farmland back into the bush before descending down the hill into Whakatane Township, walk along the main road to the town centre before heading back up the hill to cross the ridge of the Whakatane Heads before once again descending down into Otarawairere Bay, this is accessed at low tide which on the day will be 1.30pm. We can spend as much time as you like at the beautiful spot before heading back up the hill to the village. Once up the top at the village we will walk road side back down the hill.
Where to meet - The base of Ohope hill where the old community hall was to start the walk at the Kiwi Bird walk. Corner is Ohope Hill Road and Pohutukawa Ave.
What to expect - this walk is about 18km, with Bush, road, beach, yes this will be a challenge as I’m not gonna lie there are stairs, steep bits, flat bits, stunning view spots which will be worth the workout words.
Wanna have a look at the Doc’s page about it …… https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/bay-of-plenty/places/whakatane-area/things-to-do/nga-tapuwae-o-toi-walkway/
What to bring - Good footwear, water, electrolytes, lunch, snacks, sunscreen.
As the half way mark is walking Commerce street in Whakatane, there will be an opportunity to stop at the Caltex or supermarket if need be for a drink, ice block etc. loo break before we head back up the hill.
