Next to Normal is a 2008 American rock musical with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt. The story centers on a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effect that managing her illness has on her family. The musical is rated PG-13 and addresses grief, depression, attempted suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry, coming of age, familial dysfunction, and the challenges of married suburban life. This award-winning Broadway musician boasts both a Pulitzer Prize in 2010 (a rare feat for a musical) and three Tony Awards in 2009, including wins for Best Actress, Best Orchestration, and Best Original Score. Scored for a small ensemble with Violin, Cello, Guitar, Bass, Piano, and Percussion, this show has a vibrant and emotional score with songs that ranges from folk and heavy rock to classical and more traditional modern musical theater.
