About this Event
What to expect from the evening
Following a buffet at 7pm, we will hear from three speakers who are all themselves young people making their way in the farming industry including:
- Matthew Fearon and partner Ruby Nicholson who are National Trust tenant farmers at Hollows Farm in Borrowdale. They recently took over the tenancy from Matthew’s father and have benefitted from our Next Generation small grant which paid towards the cost of a chest freezer to enable them to sell their own meat to visitors to their campsite and in the local area.
- Vicky Slater from Strudda Bank Farm near Calderbridge. This is traditional family beef and sheep farm which hosts school visits as part of a Countryside Stewardship agreement and has diversified into camping pods – all part of securing income for the next generation. Vicky helps with coordination for the Farmer Network and the West Lakeland CIC.
- Jemima Green from Snittlegarth Farm who works at Belle Vue Vets, does contract farming on other farms, and manages the farm’s tourism enterprises.
Our speakers will cover what steps they have taken to develop their businesses and top tips they have learnt along the way. We will also be explaining how you can apply for a small grant worth up to £750 to help you set up your farm business.
With thanks to funding from Cumbria Community Foundation’s Direct Grants Fund and the Land and Nature Skills Service (LANSS).
