The Green Infrastructure Center (GIC) and Rhode Island DEM’s Division of Forest Environment (DFE) Urban and Community Forestry Program have partnered with the City of Newport to develop strategies for expanding and conserving tree cover. Trees provide essential benefits like cleaner air, cooler summer temperatures, reduced flooding, and enhanced outdoor spaces.
Newport’s Tree Canopy: The Current State & Future Goal
- 36% of Newport’s land is covered by impervious surfaces (pavement, concrete, buildings).
- 19% of the city is covered by trees.
- Goal: Increase tree cover to 21% over the next decade.
Now, we need your input! What environmental policies, programs, and strategies matter most to you? Join us on April 10th and make your voice heard!
