A Guided Walking Lecture Tour Reading Buildings, Discussing Construction, Size-up, Fireground OPS & Tactics for Firefighters, Officers & Commanders

A comprehensive walking tour session on building construction, occupancy risks, tactical, operational and command considerations;

  • Taking to the Streets of Manhattan Discussing Building Construction, From Taxpayers, Brick n’ Joists, Brownstones, Lofts, FPMO & Hudson Yards, High-rises, Plus FDNY Fire Museum visit. Lecture, Walking Tour, FDNY Fire Zone, FDNY Fire Museum and Group Lunch at a NYC Pizza Joint or Deli are part of the tour package.

Transitions to the streets of New York City for a comprehensive, informative and educational experience reading buildings, developing size-up , occupancy risk and decision-making skill sets, gaining greater perspectives on building construction, architecture and engineering, discussing a wide degree of operational considerations, fireground decision-making considerations based on predictable building performance, fire dynamics of occupancy risks and tactical and command protocols, options and outcomes.

The tour incorporates a historical perspective of notable incidents that shaped and influenced the fire service, fire protection, life safety and building codes. Incorporating actual site visits, illustrative building types and occupancies and property locales, the tour and lecture will present case studies, historical large loss fires and civilian casualties, firefighter LODDs their lessons, learnings and insights that resonate today just as they did in the past.

Join two Highly experienced Fire Officers and Instructors; Danny Sheridan and Chris Naum for an exceptional experience this December. This tour will incorporate architecture, construction, engineering, fire protection, fire command and fireground tactics into a robust learning experience.

The day’s events will start in mid-town Manhattan at the FDNY Fire Zone 61 W 48th Street, Manhattan NYC 10020 at 08:30 hours and make its way down to lower Manhattan and end at the FDNY Fire Museum with a tour and closing briefing session concluding between 17:00 - 18:00 hours.

Spring Session will be offered;

  • Saturday April 23, 2023

A detailed Agenda and Reference DOCS will be forwarded as we closer to the Event Date in Mid-April 2023.

An afternoon Group Lunch at a famous NYC “Pizza-Joint” or Deli will be provided. Registration provides for Tour, Lunch and Museum access.

NOTE: Attendees are responsible for any and all travel, transfers, accommodations and related expenses.

Plan and Dress Accordingly for any forecast Weather on the Day of the Tour.

• This route covers a lot of ground so, plan and prepare accordingly (70 + blocks). Good footwear a must.

• We have planned for periodic rest points (including some firehouses) along the route for comfort, snacks and refreshments and have a scheduled lunch break for the entire group.

• Monitor and plan for the forecast weather as we get closer. Please prepare for weather variations; plan and dress for being in the elements for upwards of the 8- hours.

• A small backpack or satchel with protective wear and personal items may be considered.

• Don’t forget an external battery pack to support recharging your smartphone or tablet on the go is highly encouraged. Cameras and other recording devices as you see fit.

YOUR TOUR GUIDES and INSTRUCTORS:

Danny Sheridan is a Battalion Chief in the Fire Department of New York. With over 39 years of extensive experience, he currently serves as Battalion Commander in the Third Battalion in the South Bronx of the FDNY. He spent his first five years in the FDNY carrying "the can" on 17 Truck in the Bronx and is currently responsible for supervising three engine companies, three ladder companies, and one foam unit. He is a member of the FDNY Incident Management Team (IMT) and the lead instructor with Mutual Aid Training Group.

Christopher J. Naum, SFPE is a 47-year fire service veteran and a highly regarded national and international instructor, author, lecturer and fire officer. He is a distinguished authority on building sciences and architectural construction issues affecting fireground operations, command and tactics and has traveled extensively throughout the United States and internationally delivering training programs on building performance, construction and firefighting, fireground command management and operational safety. He is the Chief of Training for the Command Institute (NY|DC) and is a technical consultant and subject matter expert to the NIOSH (USA) Firefighter Fatality Investigation & Prevention Program. A well-respected fire protection and operations consultant, Chris Naum is a former architect and fire protection engineer.
