About this Event

Shimenawa are lengths of rice straw rope used for ritual purification in the Shinto religion of Japan and used to define sacred space. It is also often used in the home to welcome the New Year. Shimenawa making class can be one unique experience. Sacred ropes are believed to ward off evil spirits and keep a place pure and holy. During New Years, Japanese make wishes and prayers for luck to the Shimenawa.

In this workshop, participants receive materials and an instructor explains the meaning of each element and how they are used. Participants make their own Shimenawa followed by demonstrations. But, you’re also free to add personal designs to your own creation to make it your one-of-a-kind Shimenawa that you can bring home. Unique experience - what is better than creating this on Tatami mats!
