Another instalment in the New Routes series, an evening of acoustic, folk and roots artists.
Set out cabaret style with candles on tables, it’s a comfortable and intimate space to listen to the best emerging and established artists from the area.
Featuring…
Bête Noire
Across the genres; folk/jazz/blues and more, singer-songwriter and pianist Angie Collins brings the melancholy as well as dark humour through her warm, smokey tones reminiscent of Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse and Carole King in delivery and style.
Usually accompanied by Cambridge’s most prestigious musicians, her quirky and heartfelt songs include themes of witchcraft, arson, heartbreak and murder!
George Breakfast
George has been writing songs and singing them to anyone who’ll listen since the late 60s. He has a number of memorable songs to his credit, and a small but loyal following who wonder why he isn’t more widely known. If you ask him, he’ll shrug and say ‘getting more widely known’ is of less interest to him than writing a better song than the one he wrote yesterday.
None of this matters much. Catch him singing live and you might get a better idea of what’s going on. He’s just full of music, which he plays in his own inimitable style, picking or flailing on a variety of stringed instruments, spanning genres and subjects as the mood takes him. On his own, or with fellow musicians, a live George show draws you in, holds your attention, and makes you very glad you were there.
He’s played on street corners, in bars and clubs, at festivals, on the radio and even a little TV, all over Europe, and various corners of the US where he lived for 9 years. He has in his time, played alongside and had his songs covered by some serious A list artists, which he is proud of but doesn’t care to dwell on.
If you get the chance to witness him live, be sure and grab it.
