Sometimes you need to tear it all down and start again. Once prominent on Boorloo’s indie-pop scene, The Bank Holidays shared stages with Deerhoof, Belle & Sebastian and Caribou, toured Australia and Europe, and released two acclaimed albums and EPs. Then life intervened, and the group scattered across the globe to Canada, Norway and Naarm.Finding themselves back in their home city, the group reformed. Their first collective effort was to put a roof over their heads, with four of out five members ending up as neighbours on a communal block in Boorloo. A collection of songs was born out of the same co-operative effort - starting with scribbled lyrics, laying down musical foundations and passing recordings over fences to work together to build a new voice, a new sound.
New Phono is the result. Following their live debut in 2024 comes “Troubleshoot The Rain”, an album created across Wadandi and Whadjuk land, with the group helming production duties.
The album sees sweeping synths and jagged guitars rub shoulders with art pop and new wave, all brought to focus by lead vocalist Bekk Crombie. Her voice may be heard either splintering across the stereo spectrum or channeling directly to your ear.
New Phono have constructed an album which canvasses the abstraction of modern work, how ideas and ways of living are passed down through families, and which explores the beauty and futility of our digital futures.
The album launches on Friday 14 November 2025 at Lyric’s Underground (Maylands, Perth-Boorloo), with guests Split Seconds and Josh Fontaine.
