The last of Martin Roscoe’s three concerts across the festival, surveying the late piano sonatas of Schubert, takes place in the awe-inspiring setting of the Minster. Written shortly before Schubert’s early death, this is music of extraordinary profundity – perhaps a meditation on life and what lies beyond, in turn sublime, fearful and defiant – and always spun through with stunning melody.
