pulling woolfibre from my fingertips Arnuk

Amber Correa, violin

‘pulling woolfibre from my fingertips’ follows the process of creating a gift, a knit scarf. Binary from knitting patterns is applied to a simple 8 note phrase, with different patterns affecting different musical parameters such as pitch, duration, and timbre. Like knitting a scarf, it begins as nothing, and through constant, at times straining repetitions, reveals itself as something pretty, warm, and made with care.

Bellsbellsbells Arnuk & Shorthouse

Declan Wicks, viola

‘Bellsbellsbells’ spectrally analyzes recordings of bells from significant places in our lives, and processes the pitches and transcribed rhythms through bell ringing patterns. At the core of this piece is a sense of distance: hearing church bells from the parking lot, not going in just yet.

Confetti Dirge Shorthouse

Özgür Kaya, cello

Confetti Dirge is a piece that explores the aftermath of a celebration from a perspective of grief. You want to return to the celebration and to the music, but you also know you have to leave it behind and let it turn into memory. It’s written in four distinct sections: heavy, slow but flowing; wavering, yet stark with no dancelike remnants; dance-like again; flickering and echoing.
