Celebrating the pioneers of Luna County, New Mexico! On March 8, 1881, a Silver Spike was driven when the 2nd transcontinental railroad was completed in Deming, Luna County, New Mexico. This was a true Wild West Town complete with ranchers, cowboys, gamblers, and outlaws. The completion of the railroad brought big money to town. Deming was dubbed "Little Chicago" with store fronts that included Chinese laundry, dry goods stores, opium dens, brothels and saloons. During World War I Camp Cody made Deming one of the largest communities in the state and farming became a huge part of the economy with the rich, fertile soil. Today Luna County produces huge amounts and processes chili, onions, alfalfa and wheat.
During your visit be sure to walk downtown to see the amazing buildings that survived the many fires the community experienced in the early years, ask about the underground tunnels that connect numerous businesses and homes, visit our museum nicknamed the Smithsonian of the Southwest and the Deming Arts Center.
