New Tennessee laws, as well as misconceptions and myths regarding various other ethical and legal issues, can result in unforeseen perils and pitfalls. If you have ever been confused about the ethical or legal aspects of practices, you are not alone. Join us for this in-person seminar and begin cutting through the confusion.

The continuous evolution of counseling and mental health practice brings with it many new opportunities but also an increase in ethical and legal complexities and the misconceptions that often surround them. More than ever, it is essential for practitioners to identify these misconceptions and myths and acquire the information necessary to practice within the standard of care.

This in-person seminar is designed to shed light on a variety of misunderstood ethical and legal issues and assist practitioners in avoiding the related risks. Examples of the topics addressed include:

  • New TN laws regarding duty to warn, consent for minors, & access to minors' records.
  • Surprising dangers associated with providing life coaching.
  • Risks of online counseling companies.
  • Unseen pitfalls of the “supervision triangle.”
  • Myths and misconceptions about practicing across state lines.
  • and more

Learning objectives:

Upon completion of the training participants will be able to . . .

  1. Describe the recent changes to Tennessee statutes regarding minors and the duty to warn.
  2. Determine the ethical and legal risks of providing coaching services through a mental health professional's practice.
  3. Outline the potential risks associated with working with online counseling companies.
  4. List the common misconceptions regarding practicing across state lines.
  5. Discuss the risks associated with supervision triangles.

Seminar speaker:

Terry Casey, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist, HSP (TN #1975) conducts webinars/seminars on a variety of topics (e.g., teletherapy/interjurisdictional practice/interstate compacts, advanced ethics & legal issues; ethics & legal issues with minors, ethical & legal issues in private practice)* for counseling and mental health professionals across the country. For the past 15 years, he has taught Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues in Lipscomb University's CACREP-accredited M.S. program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. For 17 years he served as the Clinical Director for a large counseling and psychological services organization based in Nashville. He also served for several years as the Chair of the Ethics Committee Chair for a state-level professional organization. Dr. Casey operates a private practice in Franklin, Tennessee through which he provides consultation services to private practices and counseling/mental health-related organizations.
