Odontogenic Infections from A-Z: In person and online option

Course Summary: Odontogenic infections (OI) are the most common source for head and neck deep space infections. They can be life threatening by causing airway obstruction and/ or septicemia. Because of the advances in antibiotics and surgical techniques, there were a significant decrease in the incidence of life-threatening OI (i.e. Ludwig’s angina and deep neck infections) during the last decade. However, due to lack of access to care during the COVID-19 pandemic a spike in odontogenic infection cases has occurred. OI is a serious condition that require prompt diagnosis, and management. Management can be in the dental office, or it may require hospital admission and treatment under general anesthesia.

Frequently, the management is complicated by failure to treat early, improper initial surgical management and infection with resistant organisms resulting in increases morbidity and mortality and use of resources.

In this continuous education course, we will discuss all what you need to know about how to diagnose and treat odontogenic infection. Moreover, we will emphasis on what types of OI the dentist can manage in the dental office, along with an updated antibiotic protocols for those patients.
