Who are we and what do we do…

New Life Dance (www.newlifedance.co.uk) is hosting a new pilot dance group specifically aimed at supporting individuals affected by suicide loss to engage with peers, improve social connectivity, develop new skills, and improve overall health and wellbeing.

Research has shown that both participating in and watching dance can help emotional and physical healing (Psychology Today, July 2023). Dancing requires not only balance, strength and endurability: adaptability and concentration to move according to the music and partner (Time Magazine, December 2018).

Exercise can be a powerful bereavement tool: movement releases endorphins, changes our mood state, improves sleep and allows a sense of accomplishment. In addition, as a peer group with individuals who have experienced a similar type of loss this can help us to reconnect with oneanother, improve self-esteem and acts as a form of self-care – often when, as a bereaved person, we can feel at our most isolated, lonely and withdrawn.

Wellbeing - To make the most of these sessions we would recommend attending as many of the classes as possible.

The 'NewBeginnings Dance Group' is facilitated by Martin - a qualified ISTD Ballroom and Latin dance teacher, recipient of the Phyllis Haylor scholarship and previous competition dancer who has personal experience of bereavement by suicide following the very sad loss of his brother in 2023. Martin brings his passion and expertise to help and support others who are also navigating suicide loss.

Bianca Kirby, who is an experienced bereavement counsellor/ psychotherapist and salsa dancer, will be supporting the class and participants through the process.
