In celebration of this year's Nevada County Reads, our community partners with the Nevada County Historical Society, and the Grass Valley Historical Commission are offering two historical walking tours in both Grass Valley and Nevada City. Grass Valley Tour:
The Grass Valley Historic Walking Tour will begin at the corner of Main and So. Auburn Streets-- next to the Stamp Mill. The tour is about five blocks in length, is an hour in length and will cover many historic highlights of the city: including bordellos, secret tunnels, some of the savory characters of our history and, of course, the importance of Grass Valley in context to the County. This tour will be led by Terry McAteer. Terry is the retired Nevada County Superintendent of Schools, a history teacher, Chair of the Grass Valley Historical Commission and a great storyteller.
Nevada City Tour:
Join us for a walking tour of downtown Nevada City, where we will explore the history of some of the buildings, homes, and the people who inhabited them throughout the years. Have you ever wondered who lived in one of your favorite houses or what tragedies may have befallen its residents? Hopefully, this tour will answer some of those questions and ones you didn’t even know you had yet. Some of the buildings to be highlighted include Ott’s Assay Office and his home, the Powell House, and the Kidd/Knox building. The tour will begin and end at the intersection of Union/Commercial/Main and Coyote Streets (by the Pelton wheel in Robinson Plaza, where the Chamber of Commerce is located.
Both of these tours will take place at the same time, 10am on Saturday April 4th. Choose your city, put on your walking shoes, and prepare yourself for a great time!
