About this Event
My:ND Space CIC is a supportive not for profit community specifically for Neurodivergent adults and teenagers, or those waiting for a diagnosis.
We have our own creative space in Leigh, where we host a variety of creative and social sessions for Neurodivergent adults and teenagers. All our faciliatators are Neurodivergent and we have backgrounds in art, furniture upcycling and other creative practices, as well as community and youth work.
Ruth, who runs the space, says...
"Being Neurodivergent has many challenges. It can be quite isolating at times and some people often feel misunderstood, like they don’t ’fit in’ and can struggle to thrive in a world suited to neurotypical people. I found my calm in the chaos that goes on in my brain as a neurodivergent adult by being creative. It gave me an outlet and massively improved my mental health and emotional wellbeing. So, I thought, why not share it with other Neurodivergent people!? There is very little peer support out there when you're waiting for a diagnosis and very little afterwards; especially if you are considered by professionals as having 'low support needs' or the dreaded words 'high functioning' are used to describe you. Although some people might not need it, for others, being around other neurodivergent people can help massively. It can give a sense of belonging, provide a safe space to be your authentic self, in a space where you don’t have to worry about being judged or mistreated."
In this creative, hands-on session, you’ll learn the basics of furniture upcycling and given a pre sanded piece of furniture to prepare and paint in colours of your choice. We have stencils, paints, paint pens - you will be given your own small piece of furniture to work on and take home at the end of the session.
We provide all materials and refreshments, and a safe space to share. We're asking for a £12 ticket contribution (plus booking fee)to cover some of the operational costs incurred for our project. This helps us to keep providing this much needed space within our community.
This workshop is for teenagers aged 13 - 18 of any gender identity, who consider themselves to be neurodivergent. No formal diagnosis is needed. You do need to be able to work independently as you will be expected to be able to work unsupervised (this is not 1-1 tuition), to keep yourself safe and to be able to do your own work safely.
PLEASE NOTE - We do take photographs during our workshops to evidence our work to potential funders - if this is a problem please let us know.
If you have special dietry requirements it is advisable to bring your own refreshments.
The session will be run by Janine from Kintsugi Therapy, who is a Neurodivergent artistic Community and Youth worker.
Please visit our website at www.myndspace.co.uk if you want to find out more about our project.
We have a strict refund policy - if you cancel less than 7 days before the event date then we won't be able to offer any refunds - this is because we are not-for-profit and we still have to cover our operational costs. Thank you for understanding.
