Heather Smith, MM, MBA, NCTM serves on the Music Teachers National Association Board of Trustees as the National Secretary-Treasurer for the 2022-2024 biennium. She is on the MTNA Foundation Fund Development Committee (2016-current) as well as the MTNA Business Network (2021-current). Heather is the Director of Development and Advancement for The Frances Clark Center and is the co-creator of the Center’s online course, A Pianist’s Guide to Studio Management. As an examiner for The Royal Conservatory of Music, she examines students throughout North America.

Heather is the founding executive director of Silent Film Celebration, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) music organization, that supports music teachers, students, and communities throughout the world. Formerly the assistant director and associate instructor at the University of Utah’s School of Music Preparatory Division, Heather teaches private lessons and group classes in Centerville, Utah.

Heather has written articles published in American Music Teacher, MTNA Business Digest, Piano Magazine, and Piano Inspires Kids. She is a frequent presenter at NCKP: The Piano Conference, MTNA National Conference, state and local music teacher conferences, university pedagogy classes, and international music teacher webinars and summits.

As a Certified Change Leader with the Utah Division of Arts & Museums, she regularly organizes local and national fundraising campaigns to support music education. Heather oversaw the creation of the Lenora Ford Brown recital venue at Bountiful Davis Arts Center. In 2021, she was awarded the Advocacy in Action Award by the Utah Music Teachers Association for her dedication to the betterment of Utah’s music and arts culture. In 2023, she received The Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy Outstanding Service Recognition Award for her dedication and long-standing contributions to The Frances Clark Center.

Additional professional organizations where Heather is an active member include: American for the Arts, National Guild for Community Arts Education, American Fundraising Professionals, and International Society for Music Education.

Heather received a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of Music degree in piano performance from the University of Utah. In addition to her music degrees, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Maryville University and an MBA from Westminster University. Prior to a career in music, Heather worked as a tax manager for several years.
