About this Event
Neon is vibratory visual calisthenics and a sculpture across liminal atomic boundaries. Its palpable glow and high-visibility powers of attraction affect our environments, our bodies, and our minds. Yet, light itself is massless and intangible – a no medium – an absence of material substance that our human forms use to perceive heat, space, distance, time, and motion. In this 5-evening technique-based course we will develop independent approaches to the practice of neon and embed our personal narratives in the glass. Students will dig into the materiality of neon with special focus on color, form and interactivity to uncover the dynamics of working with light as a tactile medium
What to Expect: Participants can expect to leave with approximately two units
Additional work time for intensive students: Students will also have access to additional hours in the hot shop, without instruction, on Wednesday - Saturday from 12-4pm. Students must be able to work safely in the studio, and be able to set up their area without needing instruction. Students participating in student hours will need to be approved by the instructor and TA’s.
Eligibility: No experience required. Open to ages 14 and up.
Pick-up: Neon tubes will be bombarded during the class, so students should leave with finished units of neon. Should processing take additional time, students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.
This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration.
