40th Anniversary Screening! 4K Restoration!Neon Dreams continues its "yee haw" era with a loving tribute to character actor M. Emmet Walsh. Joel & Ethan Coen's Blood Simple is a sweaty Texas crime thriller oozing with atmosphere that pushes the limits of depravity while having a damn good time doing it.
A rare feat for any first-time filmmaker(s), that in the Coen Brothers' feature debut you can see every element of their defining style, masterfully formed and on full display—including a seamless blend of absurd humour and shocking violence, a convoluted criminal plan, a haunting Carter Burwell score, and of course a brilliant eye for casting eccentrics. John Getz (The Fly) stars as a philandering bartender in middle-of-nowhere Texas, while Frances McDormand (also in her film debut) is the star as the restless housewife of morally dubious bar owner Dan Hedaya. But the real showstopper here is M. Emmet Walsh as Loren Visser, the sinister PI hired by Hedaya to K*ll his adultering wife—truly one of the all-time greatest cinematic scumbags.
Don't miss your chance to see this hard-boiled masterpiece and one of the defining examples of neon-noir cinema on the big screen, presented in a gorgeous restoration care of Janus Films. (BRENDAN ROSS)
