Nell Davies started making music in lockdown, after reading Viv Albertine’s autobiography inspired her to buy a guitar and write her first song. Her music, influenced by post-punk pop and riot grrrl, has been described as ‘bubblegum punk’. Born and raised in Liverpool, she now lives in wild West Cornwall, and records her songs in an old pigsty. (It’s nicer than it sounds, but not much.)
Her DIY songs have been featured on BBC Introducing and Spotify New Music Friday. Listen With Monger said of her, ‘Beneath the cheery and sickly-sweet pop melodies lies a wry smile and a dry sense of humour’, while Loud Women said of her latest single, The End of the World or Whatever, ‘The track sparkles with jangly indie-pop hooks, but beneath the sugar is a gut-punch of loss… It’s sad. It’s brave. It’s brilliant.’
Nell began gigging last year, playing at south-west venues including the Cornish Bank and Old Bakery Studios (where she supported the goddess that is Wendy James), up in London at the Dublin Castle, and at festivals including Bearded Theory and The Great Estate.
Meadowlarks are a group of four singers from St. Just & Pendeen, with a repertoire from the British, Irish and American folk traditions that span 400 years.
We perform at open sessions in several pubs across west Penwith. The Lafrowda Club is one of our favourite places to sing, we’ve been lucky to perform there several times, starting with a slot at the 2024 Lafrowda ‘Unfringed’ Festival.
We’ve been honoured to support Kelsey Michael, Ignatz, Sweet Brother Luke, Joe Doyle, Blind Yeo and Tealeaf with our vocal harmonies.
