fuzzyville is the new indie rock/americana project from los angeles native and portland-based neal weiss.
fuzzyville’s debut album population: one is a collection of recordings discreetly made over the last decade-plus in spare rooms in culver city, ca and portland, or. written, produced and recorded almost entirely by weiss, population: one mashes together lo-fi indie rock, sonic dissonance, loose twang and folky strums into a unique take on love, life, yearning and restlessness. weiss released two albums in the mid-2000s with his indie rock quartet W**d Patch to critical acclaim, a smidge of radio airplay and an la weekly music award nomination. With real life rearing its head, W**d Patch quietly faded away and weiss retreated to quiet corners to hone his songwriting, musical chops and recording capabilities.
fuzzyville is more than a return for weiss, but a culmination of years of focusing on and embracing artistic expression based greatly on coming to terms with his own capabilities, warts and all. as orson welles once said: “the absence of limitations is the enemy of art.”
the project also finds weiss reframing his live shows. fuzzyville aspires to be a collective, welcoming musicians to join performances and take weiss’s songs to unique sonic places. just as frequently, fuzzyville is just weiss as a one-man-gang — vocals, guitar, harmonica — delivering his unique songs in more intimate, yet plently visceral ways.
read what friends of fuzzyville say:
“The songs on fuzzyville’s population: one are remarkable, consistently literate, heartfelt constructions. The performances, the confident delivery of the different styles, and the overall sound are all things that add up to a truly world class record!” - Peter Jesperson (Twin/Tone Records, New West Records, author: Euphoric Recall: A Half Century as a Music Fan, Producer, DJ, Record Executive, and Tastemaker)
“Those who've heard the man’s prior work in his former combo W**d Patch—one of L.A.’s best unsung combos from a while back—will be thrilled to hear the new stuff, as it is entirely familiar yet has only improved with age. That precise combo of warmth, melody, and the sort of chords that set one’s spine a-tinglin’ is what sets fuzzyville apart—and you’re likely to notice it, too. Get fuzzy today! Because you can!” - Dave DiMartino (Cream, Mojo, Billboard, Yahoo! Music)
“fuzzyville population: one is both fuzzy and smooth. A smart and eclectic album blending Indie and Alt Rock to Americana and beyond. Great lyrics and cool vibe all around.” - Gary Calamar (885 The SoCalSound, LA)
