About this Event
Nebraska Commission on African American Affairs (NCAAA) is hosting the NCAAA Martin-Malcolm Advocacy Day on March 26 from 10:00AM to 4:00PM at the Nebraska State Capitol.
March 26 marks the anniversary of the sole meeting between Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X during the 1964 Senate hearings on the Civil Rights Act. Their brief convergence, despite differing philosophies, symbolizes the NCAAA’s mission to unite diverse voices in shared purpose.
We are coordinating with a charter bus company to provide transportation from Omaha to Lincoln. The bus will leave at 9:00AM from Salem Baptist Church and will return to Omaha at 5:00PM.
Attendees will:
- Learn about the Commission and the legislative process
- Develop advocacy skills
- Hear about legislative issues affecting our community
- Meet with Senators
The schedule for the day is as follows:
- From 10:30AM-11:00AM, the attendees will be briefed on the NCAAA and our legislative agenda.
- From 11:00AM-12:00PM, attendees will learn about how to engage senators on issues and participate in a role-playing exercise.
- From 12:00PM-1:00PM, attendees will have lunch at the Capitol cafeteria.
- From 1:00PM-2:30PM, attendees will get the chance to put their new skills to work, engaging with Senator staff and pulling Senators off the floor.
- From 2:30PM-3:40PM, attendees will hear from Senators in Omaha and Lincoln about their advocacy efforts in the areas of crime and restoration, economic development, education, health and wellness, housing affordability, local governance, and immigration.
- From 3:40PM-4:00PM, attendees will debrief on their experiences for the day and get ready to head back to Omaha on the bus.
